With a surname like his, it’s no wonder David Lazarus knows a thing or two about the retail industry. (Midwesterners in particular know his family as owners of a national department store chain that dominated the shopping landscape for more than 150 years.)
David still peddles a range of goods via the east side store he established in 2009 with wife Jan—but instead of neckties and drapes, his Water Tower Fine Wines showcases sophisticated German Rieslings, more than 250 Champagnes, and countless varietals from regions all over the world.
But you don’t have to be an expert sommelier to buy your wine from David and Jan; in fact, their preference is the opposite. The couple lives for conversations with casual Saturday shoppers or folks browsing the shelves during one of Water Tower’s regular Friday night tastings. Jan, a registered dietician and chef, prepares wine-friendly fare for events and tastings.
“We really enjoy the social nature of wine and the chance to meet interesting people,” says David, who has worked in the wine business for more than 25 years. “Contrary to what a lot of people think, wine isn’t a mystery—it’s just a beverage. Your tastes can vary depending on your personal experiences, the season, what you’re eating, or simply your mood.”
For that reason, David’s sales pitch involves one simple strategy: Listen closely and earn people’s trust by recommending wines they can love forever … or just for a moment. It’s an approach he came by honestly.
“When people ask me I like to tell them something I heard once: ‘My favorite wine is the one that’s in my glass.”
